Home Made Pizza Crust

In my household, we eat a lot of homemade pizza.  Rather than drop $1 each on pizza crust mixes, I set out to find a homemade version of my own.  My mother had a recipe she’s been using for years (I’m not sure of the original source).

3 1/2 cups bread flour

1 cup whole wheat flour

4 1/2 tsp. quick-rise yeast

1 1/2 tsp. salt

1 2/3 cup warm water

Simply mix the flour, yeast, and salt together.  I used a handheld mixer with bread beaters.  Gradually add in the warm water and mix until the dough becomes a large ball.

Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about a minute.  Shape into a large ball, cover, and leave for 10-15 minutes to allow it to rise.

Dough after being mixed & kneaded.

Divide this into 3-4 smaller balls.  If you are using a 12 inch round pan, this will yield 4 doughs.  Slightly flatten the doughs and place in a freezer bag.  When you’re ready to use them, remove the dough from the freezer and allow to thaw before rolling into a flat crust.  Spread onto a greased sheet and bake at 450 degrees.

Bread flour: 15 cents per cup
Wheat flour: 27 cents per cup
Salt: 1 cent per tsp.
Yeast: 60 cents for 4 1/2 tsp.
$1.33 per batch
If you make 3 crusts, cost per crust is $.44.  If you make 4 crusts, cost per crust is $.33.
The final product was actually better than store bought.  The crust is sturdier than normal, allowing you to pick up the pizza rather than having to cut it.  Freezing them allows for a quick and easy meal.  I will definitely be making this again!

  1. Baking my own bread (and bread-like things) has been on my “to do” list for months now. I know with all the “no knead” recipes out there, it should be a cinch. Maybe this weekend I’ll actually get around to it 🙂

  2. Friday nights are homemade pizza nights at our house. They are so much tastier and much less expensive than anything you can buy in store, fresh or frozen. I like to add a little olive oil to my dough, though I have to admit I do use a bread maker. Better that I put it to use than have it just take space in my cupboards, right? 🙂

  3. I think that even i could make this.

We really like to make our own pizza here and this is a great recipe.

Also, great idea for your blog. I will be following and looking forward to hearing more.
